The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship Programme (LExS) is available to exceptional non-EEA/non-EFTA students who are enrolling in a full-time master’s degree program at Leiden University.

Host Institution: Leiden University in The Netherlands.

Level/Field of Study: All full-time master’s programs at Leiden University, except for LLM (non-advanced) and MSc programs at Leiden Law School.

Number of Awards: The number and type of scholarships awarded depend on the budget allocated to each Faculty department.

Target Group: Non-EEA/non-EFTA nationals (more details below).

Scholarship Value/Duration: The Leiden University Excellence Scholarship program offers three types of awards:

  • €10,000 towards the tuition fee
  • €15,000 towards the tuition fee
  • Total tuition fee coverage, minus the statutory tuition fee

Please note that the LExS is not a full scholarship. Non-EEA LExS recipients must still provide ‘proof of sufficient funds’ for their student visa/residence permit application.

Eligibility: To be eligible for the LExS, students must have demonstrated outstanding academic performance in their previous education, particularly relevant to the master’s program they are applying for. Typically, eligible students rank among the top 10% of graduates in their previous study program. It’s important to note that proof of ranking is not required; this information serves as an indication of the competitive level.

Applicants must hold a non-EEA/non-EFTA passport and must not be eligible for financial support under the Dutch system of study grants and loans (Studiefinanciering). There is an exception for students applying for the LLM Advanced Studies programs or the MSc in International Relations and Diplomacy, as no nationality restrictions apply in those cases.

Application Instructions: To apply for the LExS scholarship, you must first submit an online application for admission to a master’s program at Leiden University. In your application, make it clear that you wish to be considered for the LExS scholarship by selecting the scholarship section and uploading your letter of motivation for the LExS scholarship.

The application deadline for programs starting in September is February 1st, and for programs starting in February, the deadline is October 1st.
