The Marshall Scholarships: Supporting Exceptional US Scholars to Pursue Graduate Studies in the UK

The Marshall Scholarships program offers a remarkable opportunity for high-achieving young Americans to undertake postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom. Each year, up to 50 outstanding individuals from the United States are selected to pursue graduate degrees at prestigious UK universities across a diverse array of disciplines. The primary objectives of the Marshall Scholarship Programme are as follows:

Host Institutions: Any recognized UK university

Level/Fields of Study: Master’s degree in any discipline, with exceptions detailed on the provided link.

Number of Scholarships: Annually, up to 50 scholarships are awarded.

Target Group: US citizens

Scholarship Benefits: The Marshall Scholarship encompasses university tuition fees, living expenses, an annual book allowance, funding for thesis-related expenses, research grants, daily travel allowances, round-trip airfare between the United States and the UK, and, if applicable, a contribution to support a dependent spouse.

Duration: The Two-Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for 2 academic years (approximately 22 months) and may be extended by the Commission for a third academic year under exceptional academic circumstances and subject to funding availability.

The One-Year Marshall Scholarship is tenable for a single academic year (approximately 12 months) and is not extendable.

Eligibility: The scholarship is exclusively open to United States citizens who, at the time of commencing their Scholarship, possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognized four-year college or university in the US, with a minimum GPA of 3.7. To be eligible for the awards commencing from October 2024, candidates must have completed their undergraduate studies after April 2021.

Individuals already pursuing or holding a British degree or an equivalent qualification are ineligible to apply for the Marshall Scholarship.

Application Process: Applications must be submitted within one of eight designated regions in the United States. Candidates can apply in a single region, which should correspond to their primary residence, ordinary residence, or educational location. Application deadlines vary according to each regional center but generally fall between late September and early October of the year preceding the scholarship tenure.

For the 2024 Marshall Competition, the application deadlines are as follows:

  • September 26, 2023, at 5:00 pm (in the time zone of the applicant’s university) for candidates and recommenders.
  • September 28, 2023, at 5:00 pm (in the time zone of the applicant’s university) for endorsement and submission by the US institution.
